Students who attend large universities or schools of higher education will often choose to join either a fraternity or sorority in order to participate in exclusive social and charitable events and activities. In the realm of fraternal organizations, fraternities usually refer to those with male members, while sororities are usually made up of females. Although fraternities and sororities were originally conceived of as ways to promote community service, charity and to develop leadership skills, some have become more focused on the social aspects of college life.
