Petroleum is a mixture of liquids varying in color from nearly colorless to jet black, in viscosity from thinner than water to thicker than molasses, and in density from light gases to asphalts heavier than water. It can be separated by distillation into fractions that range from light color, low density, and low viscosity to the opposite extreme. Petroleum oils are used in many different forms, serving many different needs and uses. One of the most common uses of petroleum oils is for fuel, such as gasoline for automobiles. This type of petroleum oil can be purchased retail at gas stations. Other uses for petroleum oils include lubricating oils, paraffin wax, and as raw materials for many derivative products.
